NASA’s account of the Mars Climate Orbiter shows how a measurement-system mismatch can survive a handoff—and why every value needs explicit units.

A unit label can look like a small detail until a value crosses from one system into another. The Mars Climate Orbiter is a striking example of why that handoff matters.

A value crossed the handoff in the wrong system

The Mars Climate Orbiter was lost after a failure to translate English units to metric, according to NASA’s mission record.

The memorable part of the story is not merely that two systems existed. It is that a value moved between contributors without the necessary unit translation being handled correctly. The number reached the next stage, but its measurement convention did not arrive in a usable form.

Units are part of the value

A bare number does not identify length, pressure, force, temperature, or any other quantity. Even when the quantity is understood, the measurement system still determines what the number means.

NIST describes the International System of Units through seven defining base units. That shared structure provides a common measurement language, but naming a system is only the beginning. In a real handoff, the source unit, destination unit, method, and review status must remain visible.

A modest four-step verification routine

Use this routine for ordinary, informational work. Consequential settings require their own authoritative procedures.

Label the source. Write the original value and its unit together.
Name the destination. State the unit required by the receiving person, document, or system.
Preserve the method. Record the conversion relationship or displayed formula instead of passing along an unexplained number.
Review the handoff. Independently check the direction, labels, and rounding before the converted value moves downstream.

What should travel with a converted value

A clear handoff retains enough context for another reader to understand what changed.

Record	Purpose
Original value and source unit	Preserves the starting measurement
Destination unit	Defines the requested output
Conversion relationship	Makes the method inspectable
Rounding choice	Shows how the displayed value was limited
Review note	Identifies what was checked before handoff

Keep the historical lesson within bounds

All Unit Conversions displays plain-language results with formula and reference material. Do not treat an informational converter as a validated aerospace, regulated or safety-critical tool. Follow the applicable authority, specification, and formal review process whenever the consequences demand them.
