Similar-looking data units can describe different things. Classify the measurement first; convert it second.

A download size and a connection speed can use almost identical labels while describing different quantities. Before you calculate, check what the notation actually means.

Four questions before the converter

Follow the branch that matches the notation in front of you.

Rate or quantity? Look for a time component such as “per second.” If it is present, the measurement is a rate; if it is absent, the term may describe a quantity.
Bit or byte? Retain the exact unit name and capitalization supplied by the task.
Decimal or binary prefix? Distinguish kilo, mega, and giga from kibi, mebi, and gibi.
Which destination? Name the complete destination unit, including any time component and prefix convention.

Do not collapse unlike terms

NIST distinguishes decimal SI prefixes from prefixes created for binary multiples.

Classification	Examples	Question to ask
Data rate	bits per second; bytes per second	Does the unit include a time basis?
Data quantity	bit; byte	Is this an amount rather than a transfer rate?
Decimal prefix	kilo; mega; giga	Is the source using an SI prefix?
Binary prefix	kibi; mebi; gibi	Is the source explicitly using a binary prefix?

Write the distinction into the request

Explicit wording keeps the classification visible. Example query patterns include 80 megabits per second to megabytes per second, 4 gigabytes to megabytes, and 2 gibibytes to mebibytes.

These prompts demonstrate how to name the units. They do not supply or imply checked numerical answers.

Small values need a display check

A very small nonzero result can appear as zero when the display rounds to a limited number of decimal places.

When a result is very small, inspect the units, formula, and available precision before copying it.

Use the data converter after classification

The documented data-transfer destination covers rates, quantities, bits versus bytes, and related pair converters. Choose the correct measurement family first, then use the destination that preserves the terminology required by your task.

Choose the quantity, then open the data converter
